I am a parent and was surprised by Mr. Englerth. He is clearly not qualified, and I am suspicious of his qualifications to even be employed by the high school. He does not seem to care and even if he did, I don't think he has the aptitude to help.

Oh my gosh, the eye bag thing! I met with him a few times sophomore year, and I happened to not be wearing make-up. He told me he was worried I wasn't getting enough sleep and my mental health may be suffering. The next year, I met with him, and he said, "I can tell you're getting more sleep. You look like you're getting more sleep." In reality, I was just wearing concealer that day!

I second the last post. Mr. Englerth has a kind heart, but he needs to stop assuming someone can't manage difficult classes if they aren't a male scholar-athlete. Infantilizing women isn't the way to go. Please check your implicit biases, sir. You'll be an even better counselor for it. :)

When I went to MHS, I had Mr. Englerth as my counselor. He cares deeply about his students, but his advice is sometimes too presumptive. Since he only sees certain kids once a semester, he cannot always avoid this issue. Although, like some of the kids on here said, it would be beneficial to everyone if he could try to make more informed judgments. Regarding the discourse on here, I understand why kids and parents are upset with him--especially if their claims are true. (Knowing this guy, it wouldn't surprise me if they were.) However, I completely understand why the other side is upset. To reiterate, Mr. Englerth is a great guy, and even if he misadvised these kids and families, he probably had the best of intentions.

It pains me to make negative remarks because he possesses the talent and heart to raise two awesome boys and coach basketball teams of many levels. However, he cannot keep harming people. It was wrong for him to assume I suffered from sleep deprivation and chronic stress because I maintained 98%+ averages in honors and AP classes. It was wrong for him to cheer me on when I dropped advanced classes to placate him. It was wrong for him to make me feel being ambitious and meticulous were symptoms of mental illness rather than commendable personality traits. Mr. Englerth, please stop judging people and spreading lies; your rumors about my family and me did irrevocable damage to our reputations and tore us apart. And please stop mistaking hard work for "overworking yourself."
