Despite her delivery of engaging lectures, Mrs. Muoio is the most hypocritical teacher I have witnessed. To illustrate, immediately after a discussion on Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and the psychological dangers of social media usage, she gave our class free time, saying "You can go check TikTok and Instagram." Dumbfounded, I respectfully brought up the irony of her statements, and she replied, "I know, right?"—then proceeded to check her own social media feed. She also complained about our class frequently, criticizing us for not giving enough insightful answers, calling us "so annoying," and saying that she wished she could miss work. Although, when the librarian joined our lesson, she had an incredibly over-the-top happy attitude and gave the illusion she was proud of us. To further her façade, she complimented students constantly, calling them "really smart." In addition, in one lesson, Mrs Muoio discussed Othello, analyzing how Venetian society rejects him as "other" and how Shakespeare illustrates that we must overcome our own implicit biases and fears. Then, a bug entered the room, and Mrs. Muoio frantically ran across the room screaming because she thought it might be a bee. She did not have an allergy to a bee sting; she was merely blinded by the fear that this might be a bee. (It was a cricket, but she was so distraught that she refused to even look at it.) The student teacher had to calm her down and get her back on task. At least the scene proved her point—even if ironically. However, one hypocrisy seriously damaged our grades. In every lecture about writing, Mrs. Muoio constantly underscored the importance of clear, in-depth analysis and specific citations to support one's thesis. Unfortunately, she never held herself to that standard. We never had any rubric, any clear set of expectations on an essay, and she deducted points arbitrarily, never able to justify her grading. One time, a girl I knew lost points for not fulfilling an MLA 8th edition citation convention Mrs. Muoio had not mentioned once. She respectfully approached her about this after class, and Mrs. Muoio understood why she made the mistake, literally calling the convention "archaic"—but decided to take off credit anyway. In retrospect, it was so difficult to build confidence and improve my writing when my teacher was manipulative and sent such contradictory messages. Due to her facetious nature, seeking her true respect was a relentless journey, even impossible. Based on her oscillating behavior, she may have deep mental issues, and if that is the case, I hope she leaves the classroom temporarily to recover. After that, her positive qualities can shine.

I am so grateful to escape her hellish class! Her misanthropic decision to teach only pessimistic literature made her students' lives exceedingly difficult—as if a pandemic was not enough to get through. In addition, her insensitive, sometimes vulgar language and pretentious demeanor made the class unapproachable and stifled student participation. For instance, she randomly exclaimed, "I no longer enjoy coming to my job" and called the entire class "annoying" for needing extra time to answer a single question. She loved to flaunt that she went to a prestigious college, though she thought it was fine to call her fellow students "a**holes" in front of the whole class! Moreover, she offered no clear guidelines for ***ignments, no rubric, no metric, nothing to help you revise and edit your work. Though one of the worst parts of her teaching was her grading. She deducted points whenever "she felt it was necessary," even though they were impossible to justify because she gave no rubric. The level of mistake and amount she took off for varied widely from ***ignment to ***ignment (no, not gradually stricter grading throughout the year to help students grow). Well, Mrs. "I die" (literally what her name means in Italian), I look forward to a year with a kinder, less narcissistic teacher, and I cannot wait for every student you were unfair to to shove their successes (that they accomplished in spite of you) right in your face full of clownish make-up.

Mrs. Muoio's lectures are insightful; she offers nuanced analyses of whatever we are studying and challenges us to think on a deeper level. As a class, we have some enjoyable, thought-provoking discussions! Nevertheless, her unclear ***ignment expectations and pretentious, unapproachable demeanor make it difficult for students to gauge their writing skills accurately.

Mrs. Muoio is the most patient, supportive teacher with whom I have worked. When you ask for help with an essay, you will get it!

Mrs. Muoio has an incredible passion for her subject, gives excellent lectures, and challenges us with thought-provoking prompts to help us deeply analyze literature--and apply it to our lives. She is genuine, always sharing her honest interpretations of literature, but she does not force her opinions upon us. Moreover, she guides many student-run extracurriculars (e.g. Newspaper Club, TEDX at MHS, Black Student Union) to amplify our voices in school. The only challenge in this class is the lack of a rubric or consistent metric to ***ess our work. It is sometimes difficult to understand why Mrs. Muoio deducts a certain number of points, making it difficult to correlate our grades to our understanding of English. Despite this problem, Mrs. Muoio still remains an outstanding teacher--and person--certainly deserving of five stars! :)
