Occasionally, he's bright and funny, but it doesn't matter because he's either careless or grumpy the rest of the time. I would expect a wrestling coach to have more discipline and less of an attitude problem.

Mr. Ricci is knowledgeable about physical education, but he seems to lack passion for his subject during class. He frequently is glued to his computer screen for over ninety percent of the period and holds a bunch of open gyms in place of classes. Honestly, the latter is fine, but he should care a bit more about teaching when he's introducing a new skill. Then, he complains about the few kids in every class kids who don't show up enough. I wonder why they miss so much of HIS class...

Category: Guidance Counselor Who Needs Guidance

Mr. James Englerth, Pittsford Mendon High School, Pittsford, NY

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Okay, I would hate to disrespect a teacher, so I am going to be as charitable as possible. I read his lawsuit (Englerth v. Penfield Cent. School District). It's not some deep dark secret; it just seems a bit stupid because he fell during a storm, so it obviously wasn't the school's fault. He lost anyway. The case is irrelevant to his capability as a guidance counselor. Unfortunately, Mr. Englerth clearly has some failings as a guidance counselor. He consistently judged someone based on the fact that they came from a (somewhat) broken family by implying they shouldn't take as many advanced classes as other kids because they wouldn't be able to handle it. That is unfair. The kid had a 98+ unweighted GPA. It seems like they were doing just fine--until he pushed them towards thinking something was wrong with them. I know they could have just ignored him, but they were probably young and impressionable and already dealing with a lot at home, so they really took his words to heart. Besides, guidance literally is in his job title...he should know how to give it--especially after having over a decade of experience and working with kids in other ways (i.e. raising two sons, coaching several girls and boys basketball teams). I've heard multiple others speak about Mr. Englerth making other unjustified ***umptions and offering less-than-stellar advice, so honestly, I can't say this story surprises me.
