Counseling isn't even a real degree. The programs are so goddamn easy that even the people who are f*cked up enough to need intensive counseling end up as counselors. Maybe they can give you some stats on college admissions from your high school...that's about all they're useful for. Responding to the super long post: Yeah, Mr. Englerth's no stankova, but what he said and did to that girl was unacceptable. Period. He probably was just trying to help but didn't know how. Unfortunately, it's literally his role to figure out how to help in situations like her's, being that his job is literally...ya know, guidance. Guidance entails knowing how to at least encourage someone to make what are likely the best decisions. (Of course, he can't force a kid to do anything, but he can definitely influence their actions and strongly influence how they perceive themselves.) Unfortunately, he wound up judging her based on a belief that "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." I actually partially agree with the concept--that statement's true more often than not, but there's also a good portion of the time it's not the case. It's not fair to judge an INDIVIDUAL based on stereotypes--even if the stereotypes really do tend to be true IN GENERAL. That kid bravely confided in you. She trusted you! That's a huge deal because frankly, she probably didn't have many adults in her life she could trust or even look up to. Mr. Englerth, that girl believed in you more than you likely believe in yourself, but you never believed in her.

Oh my gosh, the eye bag thing! I met with him a few times sophomore year, and I happened to not be wearing make-up. He told me he was worried I wasn't getting enough sleep and my mental health may be suffering. The next year, I met with him, and he said, "I can tell you're getting more sleep.
