Ms. Hefner, Pittsford Mendon High School

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ms. Hefner is extremely polite and pragmatic. During all my interactions with her, it was obvious how much she cared about helping the kids who needed it. She doesn't just speak about empathy; she practices it.

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Apparently, Ms. Julian used to be an English teacher. Now, she writes bland, monotonous speeches and censors kids whenever they try to note a serious problem at Pittsford such as racism or bigotry. Her old self would be so proud of her today. [sigh]

Ms. Melissa Julian, Pittsford Mendon High School, Pittsford, NY

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Ms. Julian is so paranoid over students speaking or writing about racism at Pittsford. The behavior is strange--it's almost as if she has a hidden history of racism or is downright afraid of people of color.

Ms. Julian, Mendon High

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Her cell phone policy allows the school to give kids a mental health referrals (for “addiction”) if teachers catch them using their phones at the wrong time. This policy normalizes “mental illness” and “addiction” to an extent that the terms lose their meaning, undermining the trauma of students who have experience with genuine mental illness and/or addiction. She also claims to care about racial justice. At assemblies, she warns that Mendon does not tolerate racism. However, her history of silencing victims of racism reveals…something else. She is not helping students of color to feel safe at school, which is a major problem in a district where a student threatened to shoot people—simply due to their black skin.

Johntony, North Royalton High School, North Royalton, OH

Rating: 1 out of 5.

This teacher loads everyone, everyday, with pounds of homework. Every day my sister feels like this teacher just sits back and throws paper at them, other known as homework. She seems like a nice person, she seems like she would be the best teacher. Nope. She secretly hates everyone and doesn't get understandable excuses. Not one of those B.S. excuses students use to get out of class, but those that are actually true. She favors those who are a try hard and purposely fails everyone. I don't understand what her problem is because my boyfriend had her and she gave him hell. He almost got kicked out of school for good because of her lame excuses. She needs to lay off the homework, chill, get her act together, and try to teach students a lot better than thinking everyone understands. Some people either have learning disabilities and some don't really care. Most people have things to do over the weekend, but she ruins everyone's plans by loading them with 10 lbs. of homework, and it's not just one packet ("luckily" you earn two or three a weekend!). Back to my boyfriend's story with her, his mom had went to complain about how she was purposely failing her son to the assistant principal (usually the assistant principals help you), but the assistant principal decides to stick with the teacher and threatened my boyfriend's mom. He quotes, "If you keep harassing the teachers here, you and your son will be restricted from coming back ever again." I thought the assistant principal would understand your problems with a teacher, but I guess they like to believe the teacher. I say Johntony needs to find a better job that suites her or needs to chill the heck out with homework and her act in class.

Dr. Michael Sullivan, Gaylord, MI

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Very sad experience. Dr. Sullivan performed a root canal on my number 13 molar. The root canals of this tooth are very narrow and extended. I warned the Dr. that I had a traumatic experience with elongated tooth roots which for teeth being extracted both as an adolescent and as a young serviceman in the Navy. Both of those times the dentists had a rough time with the teeth. The procedures lasted over 4 hours for the tooth when I was a child, and two visits over 3 hours each when I was in the Navy. Dr. Sullivan assured me that he was capable, and that his skill was superior. I believed him. After his first attempt at root canals on this tooth, Dr. Sullivan sent me home telling me that there wasn’t enough time that day to finish the procedure. Mind you I’m under the influence of sedation at this time. I told Dr. Sullivan that I would rather have the tooth pulled than go through another 3 hours in the chair. Amazingly I believed him again when he told me the reason he couldn’t finish was because of scheduling. He also said that he wanted to prove to his dental assistants he could finish the job! Being as high as I was on the anesthesia I made the poor judgement call to return. Two days went by with excruciating pain in my upper jaw. I was having to take Tylenol and Advil to relieve the discomfort. I went back to Sullivan’s office, asked AGAIN if it would be better to just extract the tooth, and he said it was his opinion he could save it, and this time he could finish the job and apply the cap. So I strapped on his gas mask and knocked myself stupid only to have the “Doctor” root around, stretch my jaw and break off half of what was left of the tooth. When I came to I distinctly remembered the snap, the dental assistant saying “Oh God!”, and the good Dr. scurrying away into another operatory. What was I told this time? Of course that I’d have to come back since it was the tooth’s fault it was so damaged that it cracked, and now he had to make a new cap with his machine. Stoned on the good Dr.’s laughing gas I told him “that’s okay, mistakes happen”. What an idiot I was. The laughing gas wore off and the Tylenol Advil routine lasted a week. I went back to Beacon Dental Center, this time for the last time, to finally get the remnants of my tooth capped. This time he squirted the glue in to fill the root canals, fixed the cap on the tooth, and away I went. Fast forward 5 years and I’m in the chair of a very competent dentist. The dentist asks if I’m in any pain and I mention the constant pain I’ve had on my left sinus area. I’ve felt this pain for three years. I’m shown the current X-ray of the area and the Dentist tells me that it’s not normal. The capped tooth is great work (machine made, remember) but there is stuff in the canals of Number 13 tooth that extend into the sinus. After visits to an Ear Nose Throat MD, Oral Surgeon and Endodontist specialists, I’m scheduled to have an operation to remove the so-called saved tooth, and resultant fistula created by the extensive overfilling of the Number 13 root canals with guttapurcha, the latex based root canal filling material. Predictably I could sue and win to recover the costs of these procedures, but the good Doctor has closed his practice, and is now enrolled in a school in Detroit. The lawyer I consulted doesn’t see that my case is strong enough to show the pain I’ve been living through since I trusted Dr. Sullivan. Of course there are risks to root canals. I accepted the possibility of a dry socket, and possible infection, but was re-assured by Sullivan that he’s done thousands of these procedures with no bad outcomes. General dentists can perform root canal procedures along with other dental procedures, but often they refer patients needing endodontic treatment to a specialized practice, who works in collaboration with your dentist. An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in saving teeth. Dr. Sullivan should have not touched that tooth after I warned him of the history of my other root issues, and certainly after he saw the roots narrowness and length.

Kid Rating Ms. McGarrity

Rating: 3 out of 5.

She is okay I guess.. only gets a 2 because I have a good grade in her class right now. She argued with me on what my 504 accommodations are, like I WAS AT MY OWN MEETING AND YOU WEREN’T also, why do you want me to not have them THAT BAD? You’re literally breaking the law. Also, she doesn’t let us eat in class. Like what if I’m hungry? Guess I’ll starve. She also hates people having gum. She’s always screaming “SPEET OUT TEH GAM”. She literally wrote up a kid for having his bag on his chair and not NEAR THE FRONT. That’s so dumb; like first of all, what if we need to get something out of the bags? We have to walk all the way to the front and walk all over the mess of other bags on the floor because you know kids can never do anything correctly if they already don’t want to. Not only can you trip, but also it’s a HUGE HASSLE. This teacher is just a huge control freak and it’s honestly quite creepy. She also gets mad at us for being later on things when she is absent for whole days. Why do you get an excuse but we don’t? Also, her projects are just impractical and weird. She made us draw a portrait with strange proportions. Not even mentioning we had to draw ourselves. We’re high school teens, ALMOST NO ONE LIKE HOW THEIR FACE LOOKS, SO WHY DO WE HAVE TO DO THAT. She also is so mean to everyone. She yells at people, and kicks us out. She also said my best friend’s artwork is unoriginal. (The at is literally her own ideas and I even help her, and they are all of her cat. Who else is drawing this specific cat? LITERALLY NO ONE!) this teacher made her so sad, she is thinking about quitting art; her life’s passion, because there is no other teacher for AP art. (She is the teacher for both normal and AP art, which I and my comrade are in respectively, so there is no escaping her unless you quit art.) overall, I have a good grade so a 2, but otherwise a 1. She is inconsiderate, mean, and demands respect that she doesn’t even give us.

Beth Burnam, Dumbarton Middle School, Baltimore, MD

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Mrs. Burnam is a bad teacher. First of all, in class I did exactly what she told me to do which was draw a model of my house from a birds eye view. I had worked hard on it but I showed it to her and she to told me to redo the whole thing (keep in mid that i only had 4 minuets left in class here) an di ahd to draw my neighbors houses too when she specifically told us that we had to draw our own house and mentioned nothing about the neighbors. Second of all, she told me and my friend to go into her cabinet to find a ruler for us to use. In there i found about a 1 foot stack of ungraded papers that she claims kids had lost. Next, she has no clue about anything she is teaching. She just gives us papers and tells us to do work out of our textbooks and she has us do assignments that have nothing to do with what we'e learning. I saw this girl go up to her with a question and Mrs. Burnam said "well you will learn that when you get into high school" and I knew that she didn't know the answer to it. Lastly, the room is very unorganized. she has random papers floating around the room and she lost a groups culminating event project (luckly they found it) but they had to look for it and Ms. Burnam didn't even feel bad for them. I do not reccomend her.

Mr. Donner, Pittsford Mendon High School

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Mr. Donner cares about the subjects he teaches, so it is a shame he doesn't care more about his students. However, he does explain materials well and provides cool ways to remember information. The videos and anecdotes he shares keep you on the edge of your seat! That's why it's such a shame his--how do I put this gracefully--bitter attitude ruins his classes. My friend had a medical emergency and was stuck in the hospital for the first week of school, but she was responsible enough to email him from the hospital. She asked what she missed. He never cared enough to respond! She was stuck in class, confused and left to figure out everything on her own. Throughout the semester, he proceeded to be unkind towards her without reason in many minor and a few major ways. For instance, one day, he placed a test on everyone's desk or handed it to them. At least, he did that for everyone other than one person. For my friend, he hurled the test her way. It missed her desk, but he never apologized. Another time, she asked Mr. Donner if she could go to the bathroom, and he breathed "Yeah" without even making eye contact with her. He even tried to gaslight her into believing a course she did not really need was required...but that's a story for another time. Furthermore, he gaslit me about deadlines, probably forgetting what he had said, and deducted a bunch of points from several assignments I had poured hours into. He would also always call out this one kid during class and even said that they were his least favorite student of all time--in front of everyone. Mr. Donner is one rude dude. For your own good, please try to avoid classes with him, unless you're really talented in the subject he teaches and--to be blunt--know how to be a teacher's pet. To reiterate, Mr. Donner's lectures are outstanding. Any aspect of his teaching that requires compassion...has room for improvement.
